]]><![CDATA[KENJI SHIGEOKA ATELIER]]>Wed, 22 May 2024 14:36:38 GMThttps://www.hirotakakasuga.com/blog/kenji-shigeoka-atlier生命感あふれる多くの彫刻作品を送り出している重岡建治先生は８８歳で今でも現役、毎日作品を制作されている。伊豆高原の五月祭にも参加されているので、先日先生のアトリエを訪れ、いろいろな作品を見ながら久しぶりにゆっくりお話しできた。先生の作品はどれも現代的に抽象化されているけれど、その中に深い愛情の温もりを感じる。
最近朝早く起きることが多くなった先生は、夜が明けるまでの２時間ほどの時間を使って沢山のスケッチを描くそうだ。その中から本当に自分が気に入ったものを選び、小さな作品を制作するのが何よりも楽しいと言って、手のひらサイズの白い女性像を私の手に乗せてくださった。自分の心と純粋に向き合いながら制作された先生の作品には命が輝いている。

Kenji Shigeoka's atelier is two doors down from my atelier in Izukogen. Mr. Shigeoka, now 88 years old, is still active today, creating sculptures and paintings.
I visited his studio the other day and was able to talk to him for about an hour while looking at his various works.
All of his works are modern and abstract, but you can feel the warmth of deep love within them. This contrasts with the inorganic forms produced by modern society, which prioritizes economic efficiency.
Large bronze works installed in public places are often created upon request from clients. However, Mr. Shigeoka, who has been getting up earlier in the morning lately, said that he spends the two hours or so before dawn to draw many sketches. He said that he really enjoys creating small works of art more than anything else from those sketches, and he placed a small white female figure in the palm of my hand. I feel the radiance of life in the works created while genuinely confronting one's own heart.

毎日の生活の中では、「見る」ということは主に対象を「認識する」ために使われているようだ。きれいな花を見ると、人は思わず「ああ美しい！」と思いながら花の名前を思い出そうとする。これはコブシの花かモクレンか・・・。それがモクレンだとわかると、納得して、その花を見ることをやめる。そして「モクレンが美しかった」という印象とそのおぼろげな残像が記憶に残る。忙しい生活の中では、人は対象を見るけれど、「観察する」ことは少ない。

面白いことに、カメラを持つと世の中の景色が変わって見える。それは、画家が絵を描くときに感じる感覚と同じかもしれない。カメラのファインダーで切り取られた画像は、その外側にある日常の生活から分離して、写真家が描こうとする別次元の「物語の世界」に入っていく。作品を創る時も鑑賞する時も、その作品に新鮮さを感じるのは、今まで通りすぎて見落としていた「新しい何か」が見えた時だ。カメラは、言語化されて整理された日常生活から離れ、自由な物語の空間への旅をさせてくれる魔法の道具だ。

In everyday life, "seeing" seems to be mainly used to "recognize" an object. When you see a beautiful flower, people try to remember the name of the flower, thinking "Oh, it's beautiful!" Is this a Magnolia Kobus flower or just a Magnolia? When he finds it to be a Magnolia, he is convinced and stops looking at the flower, just remembering the impression that "Magnolia was beautiful" and its vague afterimage. In a busy life, people see the subject, but rarely "observe" it.

Interestingly, holding a camera makes the world look different. It may be the same feeling that a painter feels when painting. The image cut out by the camera's viewfinder separates from the everyday life outside it and enters another dimension of the "story world" that the photographer is trying to draw. When I create or appreciate a work, I feel the freshness of the work when I see something new that I have passed by and overlooked. The camera is a mysterious machine that enables you to travel from your daily life, which is verbalized and organized, to a space of free stories.

世界の経済活動に大打撃を与えている新型コロナウイルスの危険な状況から抜け出る日が待ち遠しい。
しかし、車や工場や航空機の排気ガスが減ったおかげか、深呼吸すると冷たい冬の空気は澄んで美味しく、晴れた日には、空から降り注ぐ陽の光がキラキラと輝いている。日本でこのような美しい光を感じたことは今までなかったのではないか・・・。思わず聖書の「創世記」にある言葉が頭に浮かんだ。

初めに神は天と地を創造された。
地には形なく、空虚だった。闇が深遠の上にあった。神の心が水の上を動いた。
神が言われた、「光あれ」そして光があった。
神は光を見て、良しとされた。神は光を闇から分けた。
神は光を昼と呼び、闇を夜と名付けた。晩と朝、最初の一日であった。

The impact of COVID-19 has been devastating to global economic activity. However, when you take a deep breath the cold winter air is clear and delicious, and on a clear day, the sunlight coming down from the sky is shining, probably because the exhaust gas from cars, factories and aircraft has decreased. I have never felt such a beautiful light in Japan in my life.　
I am not a Christian, but the word from "Genesis" in the Bible came to my mind:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

太陽が地平線に沈んで、闇が砂漠を静かに包み始めると撮影は終わる。一息ついてから、水筒に残った水を飲みほす。
機材をバックパックに収め、はるか遠くに停めた車に向かう。ずっしり重いカメラ機材と三脚を担いで一日中歩き回ったので、集中力と体力の限界を感じる。砂漠のうねりを感じながらぼーっと歩いていると、目の隅にちらっと何かが映る。振り向くと、「お待ちしておりました、私を撮ってください！」と言わんばかりの光景がそこに展開している。「旅で求めていた出会いはこれ、これなのだ！」。それからは、無我夢中で残光の中での撮影作業に入る・・・。

私が気に入っている作品の数々は余計なことを一切考えていない時に撮影されたものが多い。自分の心に響く光景が見える瞬間は、なぜか、意識が朦朧としていて集中力が弱まっている場合が多い。逆に、意識レベルが高い時に撮影した多くの写真には魅力を感じない。先月、『旅は日常の理性の枠から自分を解放してくれる』ということを書いたが、待ち望んでいた被写体との出会いは、自分の中で眠っていた感性が意識の低下とともに解き放たれることと深く関係しているように思う。感性で捉え、理性で絞り込む。私の作品は感性と理性の相互作用から生まれているようだ。

Shooting ends when the sun sets on the horizon and the darkness begins to quietly fill the desert. After taking a deep breath, I drink up the water remaining in the water bottle. I put the camera equipment in a backpack and head for a car parked far away. As I walked around the desert all day carrying the heavy equipment and the tripod, I feel the limits of my concentration and physical strength. As I walk a while feeling the ups and downs of the desert, I catch something in the corner of my eyes. When I turn my head to see it, there it is: the scene that just says, "I've been waiting for you. Please photograph me now!" This is "the" encounter I have been looking for! After that, I am absorbed in shooting in the afterglow ...

Many of my favorite works were shot when I was not thinking about anything. When I capture a scene that resonates with me, my consciousness is often stunned and my concentration is weakened. On the contrary, many photographs taken when the level of consciousness is high are often not attractive to me. Last month, I wrote that "travel frees me from everyday reasoning". The long-awaited encounter with the subject of my interest seems to be deeply related to the mind state when the sensibility inside me is released as consciousness declines. Capturing the subject of interest with sensibility and focusing down by reasoning: all my work seems to be born from the interaction between sensibility and reasoning.

自由気ままな旅にはカメラを持っていく。これは多くの旅人に共通したスタイルだ。日常の制約から解放された旅人は、子供のような好奇心で旅の風物に接してその価値ある経験をカメラに収める。このような旅では、旅の経験そのものに価値があり、写真はその経験を鮮明に記憶しておく脳の延長線上にある。

一方、写真愛好家や写真を職業とする人々は写真を撮る目的で旅に出ることが多い。これまでこんな写真を撮ってきたから、次は何処そこへ行ってどんな写真を撮ろうと考えて旅に出る。頭の中で組み立てたコンセプトやプロジェクトの枠組みの中で意図するものを表現するための「取材旅行」だ。アメリカ南西部の砂漠地帯や東部の湿地帯へ何度も出かけて、そこに息づく宇宙的生命観を主題にしたそのような作品づくりを私も長い間続けてきた。取材旅行では、コンセプトを反映した写真そのものに価値がおかれていて、旅は作品づくりに必要な手段と考える。

一昨年の冬、長年行ってみたいと思っていたカリブ海の国キューバへ行った。今までの取材旅行のモードから離れて、久しぶりに純粋な好奇心が私の背中を押してくれた旅をした。そこでは私は写真家ではなく、カメラを持ったただの旅人になった。言葉の通じない社会主義国キューバでの冒険旅行で、私の目は子供の目になっていた。何もかも珍しく不思議な光景だった。今まで全く経験したことのない世界がそこに存在していると感じた。旅人は夢中になってカメラを覗き、目にとまった風物を写した。帰国して撮影した写真を整理しているうちに、この「旅写真」を一連の美術作品として見てもらいたいと思うようになった。

自由気ままな旅に出て社会常識、制約、そして日常の理性の枠から解放されると、不思議なことに今までは見えなかったものが見えてくる。最近訪れた中部地方では、秋の霧雨の中を濡れながら歩き、自然との出会いを楽しんだ。
これからはこのような自由気ままな旅をもっと大切にしていきたいと考えている。

Take your camera with you on a free-spirited trip. This is a style common to many travelers. Such travelers often decide their destinations based on their pure curiosity, free from the constraints of everyday life, and travel with a child-like mind.

On the other hand, photo enthusiasts or professionals often go on a trip to take pictures for their works. "I took pictures like this before, then where should I go next?" They think about the consistency of the content and go on a trip. They construct a concept, write it down, and create their artwork within that framework, and express their intention. It is a "coverage trip", just like collecting material for news coverage. I myself have been making those coverage trips for a long time.

In the winter of the year before last, I went to Cuba, a Caribbean country that I had wanted to visit for many years. It was not a coverage trip. I made the trip where pure curiosity pushed my back for the first time in a long time. There in Cuba, I was not a photographer any more, but just a traveler with a camera. During the adventure trip to the socialist country, my vision became a child's eye. Everything was a rare and mysterious to me. I was in a world that I had never experienced before. I photographed every feature of the country that caught my eye. After coming back to my home country, I organized the photographs and found that the series of travel photography can be seen as works of fine art.

When you embark on a free-spirited journey and be freed from common sense, constraints, and everyday reasoning, strangely, you start to see things that you could not see before. In the Chubu region of Japan, which I recently visited, I enjoyed encountering nature, walking in the drizzle of autumn.
I would like to cherish such a free-spirited trip more from now on,

革命後のキューバは主要な貿易先を失い経済発展が遅れた。食料や日用品は悲しいほどに乏しく、廃墟のような歴史的な建物に暮らし、主要な交通手段は今でも徒歩と馬車での生活だ。しかし、不思議なことにキューバでは見るものすべてが輝いて見える。陽光が燦々と降り注ぐ海、南国の風にそよぐ植物、鮮やかなパステルカラーの古い建物や自動車、街の至る所で聞こえる音楽とそれに合わせて楽しく踊る人々 - そこからは貧しさに伴う惨めさや治安の不安を感じない。教育は大学まで無料。医療も無料。経済格差のないこの社会主義国では楽観的な国民性に加え、優しさと思いやり、音楽・ダンス・アートを愛する心がモノやカネに代わって人々の心のよりどころになっているようにも思える。

In my trip to Cuba two years ago , I was able to see the lifestyle and nature of the beautiful country. After the revolution, the economic development has remained slow with constant shortage of commodities and food. Main means of transportation is still on foot and by horse-drawn carriage. Strangely, however, I did not feel the misery and insecurity often found with poverty. Education is free to the university, and medical treatment is also free.　In a socialist country without economic disparity, art and music seemed to play an important role to sustain their life. I saw people living optimistically, gently and lively surrounded by old historical buildings painted in beautiful pastel colors.

写真によるアート表現には音楽と共通したものを感じる。
そして、アンセル・アダムスの名言にも共感する。
「写真は撮るものではない、作るものだ」
「ネガは楽譜であり、プリントは演奏である」
作品制作をしていて思うことは、音楽になる素材は身の周りのありとあらゆる場所に存在していて、それを感じた時にシャッターを押しているという事。写真を「撮る」ということは、自然界に描かれたリズム・メロディー・ハーモニーに耳を傾け、それをスケッチすること。スケッチは「現像」すると初めて楽譜（原画）になる。そして、書かれた楽譜を読み取りながら演奏するのが「プリント作り」だ。だから、写真家は作曲家であり演奏家でもある。
「写真は人間が表現しようとしたもの以上のものは表現できないということです。そして、この媒体がもつ可能性を最大限に生かしきれた人間はいまだかつていないということです」
アダムスの言葉は写真によるアート表現の面白さとその可能性を物語る。

Art expression with photography is similar to music.
Ansel Adams's saying resonates with my feeling of artwork creation:
“You don't take a photograph, you make it.”
"The negative is comparable to the composer's score and the print to its performance."
What I think recently is that music exists everywhere in the real world around us, and when I feel it, I press the shutter.
To "take a picture" is to listen to the rhythm, melody, and harmony of nature and write it down in the score with a camera.
Printmaking involves interpreting the written score and playing music of my own.
The photographer is both a composer and a performer.
“We must remember that a photograph can hold just as much as we put into it, and no one has ever approached the full possibilities of the medium.”
Adams' words get to the heart of artistic expression of photography.

例年は定期的に海外に出向いて作品づくりのための撮影をしていたが、今年の春以降はパンデミックのおかげでそのようなことが出来ていない。しかし、その替わりに、楽器に触れて音楽に親しむ時間ができたり、今後の作品づくりについて根本から見直す余裕が出てきている。コロナ禍の影響で外出することが少なくなったことが、昨年まで忙しく走り続けてきた私のライフスタイルを「あるべき姿」に変化させているようだと感じる。海外の宇宙スケールの大自然から、自分の足元に見える動植物の小さな生命活動に目を移すと、これはこれでまた素晴らしい宇宙の地平が展開しているのを発見する。そのような小さな被写体にカメラを向けると、小学生の頃、虫眼鏡で昆虫や草花を覗いたワクワク感が蘇ってくる。子供の頃、虫眼鏡や天体望遠鏡を覗いて目を丸くしたことが今の写真生活に繋がっているのかもしれない。どうも私は今でも「写真という虫眼鏡」で身の周りの世界を覗き見て、その不思議な光景にワクワクしているようなのだ。

In previous years, I used to go abroad regularly to take photographs to make artworks; but since this spring, I have not been able to do so due to the COVID-19 pandemic.　However, instead, the pandemic has given me valuable time to restart practicing flute music as well as to reconsider my future photographic themes and projects.　The impact of the COVID-19 crisis has given me opportunity to change my lifestyle to what it should be, heading toward the future.　As I shift my attention from the cosmic scale nature to the tiny life activities of plants and insects around me, I discover yet another wonderful cosmic horizon unfolding.　When I point my camera around my feet, I can recall the thrill of looking at insects and flowers with a magnifying glass when I was in elementary school. Maybe, my childhood experience of looking through a magnifying glass and an astronomical telescope had led me to my current life in photography, for I am still thrilled by looking into the wonderful world through the magnifying glass called photography.

サンフランシスコからカリフォルニアのPacific Coast Highway (PCH)を３時間ほど南下すると、断崖絶壁が続くビッグ・サーの海岸線に出る。ここは多くの風景写真家が夢見る美しい場所で、今まで数限りないほどの写真が撮影されている。私もそのような写真家の一人で、ロサンゼルスとサンフランシスコの間をドライブするたびに１９３１年に建造されたこの美しい橋 (Bixby Creek Bridge) を撮影してきた。３月中旬に新型コロナが猛威を揮いそうな気配の中で、人気のないPCHを静かに南下した今回の旅では、カリフォルニアの海岸線がひときわ美しく輝いていた。残念ながらウェブサイトでは作品の発する繊細な感覚を伝えられないので、近いうちにプリント作品を展示する機会を設けたいと思う。

旅で撮影した写真が作品になる確率はとてつもなく低い。旅の間はどのショットも最高の出会いだと手ごたえを感じ、毎日充実した時間を味わう。しかしながら、旅から戻り、撮影された画像を時間をかけて眺めていると、そのほとんどが駄作だとわかり、毎回愕然とする。子供のような素直な目で捉えたものを除き、ほとんどの写真からは旅のその場で感じたトキメキが引き出せないのだ。光は良いし、構図も良い、そして対象がしっかり表現できている・・・が、それを見ている自分の心の動きが表現できないものはどれも駄作だ。「良い作品をつくるためには、イメージが典型化されている有名な場所を撮るな」、とその道に長くいる人々は言う。それも一理あると長い間私も思ってきた。しかし、最近は、そういうことは２次的なことで、何でも撮りたいものは撮れば良いと思うようになり、自由に羽ばたくようになった。そして、作品になるかどうかは、描こうとしている対象物そのものよりも、心のトキメキがどう表現されているかが大切だと思うようになった。「人生がときめく片付けの魔法」ならぬ、「人生がときめく作品づくりの魔法」。『その写真、トキメキますか？』・・・That's a good question!

Big Sur, California is a beautiful place dreamed by many landscape photographers, and countless photographs have been shot. I am one of those photographers, and I have photographed many shots of this beautiful Bixby Creek Bridge, built in 1931, every time I drove between Los Angeles and San Francisco. In the midst of March, when the COVID-19 seemed to be raging, while I was quietly heading south on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), the California coastline was shining stronger than ever.

The probability that a photo taken during a trip becomes a piece of artwork is extremely low. During a trip, I feel that every shot is a great encounter, and satisfying. However, upon returning from the trip and after carefully inspecting the images, I find that most of them are not suitable for my artwork. The major reason is that in my photograph I cannot feel the excitement I felt on the spot while traveling. It will not become my artwork useless I feel my heartbeat in it. To make a good artwork, photographic experts say, "avoid going to well known places" where everyone is familiar and images are stereotyped. I thought that it makes sense, but these days, I feel that is not a primary concern, and I have come to think that I should to go to wherever I want to go and photograph whatever I want to shoot, and I am completely free. I think that whether or not it becomes an artwork does not depend on the subject being photographed, but on whether or not my heartbeat is in the photograph.

今回から毎月、このサイトのホームページに近作を一点ずつ掲載しようと思う。
今月の作品は2019年６月にニューメキシコ州のサンタフェからタオスに向かう途中、ネイティブアメリカン（インディアン）の居住地で撮影した。ニューメキシコ州の6月は、青い空に綿雲がポカポカ浮かんでとても美しい。乾燥した砂漠に注ぎ込む光や熱い風がつくり出す大自然の芸術作品に囲まれていると、いつも幸せな気分になる。そして、見渡す限り地平線に囲まれた大地をドライブしていると、地球という小さな星を旅している感覚が強くなる。

最近は電子メディアの発展が目覚ましく、芸術表現との関わりも深くなりつつあるが、このようなウエブサイトでプリント作品の魅力を伝えようとすると、紙という伝統的なメディアと、PC・タブレット・スマホなどの新しいデジタルメディアとの違いが大きいのに気づく。私の作品は大判プリントが多いので、反射光と透過光の違いや一般的なPCの画面サイズと解像度の制約などから、デジタルメディアでは表現しようとしている内容を伝えにくい。先ほどこのサイトのホームページに掲載したパノラマ作品は横巾が２ｍだが、普通の大きさのPC画面では20～30cmになり、表現したい細部をじっくり見ることができないし、紙や顔料の持つ風合いも伝えることは難しい。最近は家庭用テレビのサイズが大型化しているので、近い将来には大判作品の紹介にはパソコンよりもネットに接続したテレビの方が良くなるかも知れない。また、色味や輝度・コントラストなども個々のデバイスごとに異なることも問題なので、より高い次元の画質の標準化も望まれる。いずれにせよ、美術表現という視点に立つと、紙媒体のもつ価値は簡単には電子メディアで置き換えられるとは思われないから、これからも展覧会などを通じて、プリント作品の魅力を多くの人に伝えていく地道な努力をしていきたい。

Starting this month, I will regularly introduce a recent work on the Home Page of this website.
The panoramic work posted for this month was photographed in New Mexico, USA, on the High Road to Taos in June 2019. June is one of the most beautiful seasons in New Mexico with cotton-like clouds in the blue sky. I felt very happy being surrounded by the artworks created by the sunlight and dry air of the desert. Driving through the vast area of horizon made me feel like traveling through a tiny planet called the Eath.

When trying to convey the impression of an original print on my website, The difference between traditional paper media and new media such as PCs, tablets and smartphones becomes an obstacle. Most of my works are large-format prints, so it is difficult to convey the impression due to the restrictions on the screen size and resolution of typical PCs. 小学五年生の時、ブラスバンドの音に魅了され、私は中学に入ってからフルートを始めた。しかし、高校を卒業してすぐ海外に留学したため、楽器の練習を続けることができなくなり、フルートは長い間クローゼットの中に眠っていた。不思議なことに、最近、音楽に明け暮れた青春時代の感覚が蘇ってきたので、パンデミックで生じた外出自粛の時間をフルートの練習に充てることにした。何十年かぶりに毎日少しずつ練習をしてみると、以前には出したくても出なかった好きな音色が聴こえ始めていることに気がついた。毎日写真作品を制作し続けていると、前には見えなかった微妙なトーンが少しずつ見えるようになってくるのと同じ感覚・・・。
青春時代に始めた写真もフルートも、行きつ戻りつスパイラルを描きながら少しずつ前進していくような気がする。

When I was in the 5th grade of elementary school, I was fascinated by the sound of the piccolo, played in a brass band, and started playing the flute after entering the middle school. However, when I started my college life abroad, I was unable to continue practicing the music instrument, and the flute ended up staying in the closet for a long time. Recently, I decided to devote my time to restart practicing the flute using the extra time generated by the pandemic. As I practice every day, I have now started to recognize subtle tonal differences for the first time since I started to play the instrument. It is the same feeling as recognizing subtle tonal differences in my photographic artworks as I keep repeating the creative process daily.
It seems that music and photography works make progress, through daily practice, going back and forth in a spiral form.

作品の整理をしながらウエブサイトの更新をしていると、撮影地や題材、そして表現法や内容が気づかないうちに微妙に変化してきているのがわかる。特に、一昨年末のキューバへの旅をきっかけに始めたカラー作品への取り組みからは、新しい次元の作品づくりが始まっているという感じがする。モノクローム作品づくりで慣れ親しんだ陰影を使った抽象表現に加えて、カラー作品の写実的な情緒表現はこれからの作品づくりの興味深い課題だ。

While updating the website while organizing the works, I observe that the shooting location, the subject matter, the expression method and the content have been subtly changing.
In particular, the work on color works, which started after the trip to Cuba at the end of the year before last, gives the impression that a different dimension of creative works has started. In addition to the simple expressions that are used to make monochrome works, the effect of complex emotions from colors is an interesting subject for future work creation.

ウエブサイトの更新は昨年末から再開して少しずつ進んでいるけれど、このブログに書き込むのは何と三年半ぶり。
今春は二月の末から三月中旬までカリフォルニア州とフロリダ州で撮影を行った。新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大の心配される中、滑り込みセーフで渡米し、間一髪で無事帰国できたという綱渡りのタイミングだった。一週目はカリフォルニア州のジョシュア・ツリー国立公園からデス・バレー国立公園を周る撮影ワークショップを友人と催行。二週目は十年ぶりにフロリダ州のエバーグレーズとフロリダ・キーズを訪れ、三週目に再度カリフォルニアに戻り海岸線を撮影した。フロリダとカリフォルニアは今までに何度も訪れ、その漠然としたイメージを形にして何とか作品にしたいと思っていたが、いまひとつ満足いくものができていなかった。しかし、今回の旅ではそのイメージが現実の風景となって目の前に結像した。ここに来てようやく裸眼でものを見ることができるようになったと感じた旅だった。好きな場所への旅は本来の素直な目を取り戻してくれる。

The update of this website had been resumed at the end of last year. This blog is the first post in almost three and a half years!
This year I traveled to the United States from the end of February to the middle of March to shoot in California and Florida. Fortunately, it was a split timing to be back in safe as we were concerned about the spread of Corvid-19. During the first week, we held a photography workshop in California traveling from Joshua Tree National Park to Death Valley National Park. In the second week, I visited the Everglades and Florida Keys for the first time in ten years and returned to California again in the third week to photograph the West Coast.
While I was developing the large number of raw images shot during the trip, I felt strongly that this type of relaxed travel plan is a key condition to get satisfying artworks.

１１月１４日は月が地球に接近する SUPERMOON が見られるとの事で楽しみにしていたが、その日はあいにくの雨。しかし、１５日には雨が上がって夜空には "ALMOST" SUPERMOON 。展覧会に出展した作品の運搬と片付けに伊豆のアトリエに移動する途中、熱海を過ぎて錦ヶ浦を出たところで海上の雲から顔を出した。暗い夜空に浮かぶ月をまじまじと見るのは久しぶり。大切なことを忘れていたことに気がついた。

11月3日から青山の PROMO-ARTE GALLERY で開催される ART Photography ASIA の展覧会には最新作の大判作品4点を展示する。美術作品としての写真を追求していると、絵画や版画などの他のミディアとの違いについて時々考える。写実性を重んじている作家が描いた油彩や水彩、水墨、版画、鉛筆画などは、使う紙やエンボスなどのテキスチャーの僅かな違いはあるにせよ、極めようとしている表現はほとんど写真と変わらないとさえ思える。その一方で、写真の「記録性」とは異なった方向性を探ろうと、高度に抽象化された表現や、幻想やロマンを感じさせるクラシックな絵画的表現を追求している写真作家も多い。デジタル技術の発展と共に写真の表現性が飛躍的に広がった今、私は写真による美術表現についてあらためて考える時が来ていると感じている。今、私にとって最も大切な創造プロセスは、カメラで捉えられた「光の強弱信号」を「感性で感じた脳信号」に変えることだ。特に、写実性を究極まで追求する事により、心では感じられるが目には見えないものまでも炙り出すことができるスーパーリアリズム表現は、写真技術の特徴を生かす最も興味深い世界の一つだ。

I will exhibit four large-format prints at Promo-Arte Gallery, Tokyo, 11/3 through 8. As I pursue photography as artwork, I often think about the differences between photography and other art media, such as paintings and lithography. The realistic expression of these non-photographic media seems to have common goal with photography even though subtle, textual differences exist due to the materials used. On the other hand, a large number of fine-art photographers are making their works highly abstract or going towards fantastic and romantic expression trying to depart from the documentary and reportage nature of photography. With the development of digital technology, capability of photographic fine-art expression has widened dramatically, and it is the right time for me to revisit and confirm how I should approach my creative work. To me the most important creative process at this moment is the process of converting the light signals captured by a camera to the brain signal that was felt by my sensibility. In particular, super-realism, which can be reached by the pursuit of realism to the ultimate, is one of the most interesting areas of photographic expression.

旅の最終日は二ースのシャガール美術館を訪れた。展示されていた大きなサイズの作品はどれも幻想的、民族的、宗教的で、ユダヤ人として受けた迫害を人間愛と宗教で乗り越えてきた人生観がひしひしと伝わってきた。美しい自然、美しい街、美味しい食べ物、美的な感覚に囲まれた生活。フランスの旅は今まで味わったことのない価値観を感じた印象だった。

エクサンプロバンスからマルセイユへ降りてコルシカ島へ渡り、島の険しい山々を横断した後、コート・ダジュールが今回の旅の終点。多くのアーティスト達がこの場所の光にを魅了されるわけがよくわかった。確かにここの光は他では見たことのない格別な美しさだ。

南仏エクサンプロバンスの丘にあるセザンヌのアトリエを訪れた。木漏れ日が美しい林の中にあるアトリエは、北側に巨大な窓をつくり南側の窓は小さめにして、一日中フラットな光が入るように設計されている。彼の静物画に描かれた小瓶や果物がいろいろ並んでいて、１００年以上前に彼が見た光を直接感じられたのは貴重な経験だった。アトリエをでてから彼が頻繁に通った近くの丘に登ってサント・ヴィクトワール山を見た。興味深かったのは、山は思っていたより遠くにあり、彼が中望遠レンズの視角で風景を見て絵を描いていたということだ。夜はセザンヌが好んで通ったカフェ「レ・ドゥ・ギャルソン」で食事をした。この国では生活行動や空間全体が高いレベルのアート感覚に支えられているように感じる。

中央アルプスの駒ケ岳は私の生まれ故郷の山。小学校の頃登った記憶に誘われて、今回この山に登ってみた。今はロープウェーがあるので登山は以前よりずっと楽になったが、私には今回の登山はかなりきつかった。難所の八丁坂を登り切って山小屋に向かう比較的平坦な場所でも空気が薄いので呼吸はハアハア、脈拍数がタッタッタッといつまでたっても下がらない。軽い高山病にかかり、頭痛がして気分が悪い。歩きながら「来るんじゃなかった」と思わずつぶやいた。しかし、山小屋に着いて一休みして外にでたら、この気持ちはすぐに「来て良かった！」に変わった。目の前で行われる雲と光の美しいショーは日没まで続いた。山小屋の朝は早い。朝３時に起きて外へ出たら眼下には月の光に照らされて雲海が静かに眠っていた。朝日が昇ると同時に雲海がザワザワと動き出して地球生命のエンジンが動き始める。太陽と共にある生命活動を見ながら下山する足取りは軽く、高山病は麓に着いたらケロッと治ってしまった。
６０年以上前にこの山に登ったことが、今私が大自然をテーマにした作品づくりをしていることに繋がっていると確信した記念すべき経験だった。
